Summer Olympics

The Summer Olympics showcase the best of the best in sports, bringing together top athletes from around the world. Traveling in from over 200 countries, athletes gather in one, “host” location every 4 years. Each host city/country’s culture, creativity, economy, achievements, and geographical beauty are on display for just over two weeks through festivals, events, branding, promotions, etc.

Host cities are selected almost a decade in advance, in order to enable preparation to accommodate the millions of people that attend the Olympics to spectate. The Summer Olympics of 2024 are in Paris, France. And 2028 in Los Angeles, USA.

Where will the 2036 Summer Olympics be held? For our project, we will work in groups of 3-4 to generate brand identities for the following city and country: Bogotá, Colombia

The symbol is a cumulation of the artistic history, playful nature, and supportive culture. The initial form is of a hand as well as the forms of two people.

After talking to Juanita, a native of Bogota Columbia, she explained how the people of Bogota are “warm, welcoming, caring and always willing to help .” The hand shows this welcoming nature, as well as a symbol of politeness in the form of a friendly hand gesture. In addition, many textiles and other hand-crafted products are another beautiful form of art within culture.

Next, both the person and the colors are a representation of the energetic culture of Bogota. The colors are derived from the apparel worn at sports events. These blue, red, and yellow hues resemble the flag in a fun and expressive way to support their country. Moreover, it’s an insight into Bogota’s overall colorful scenery throughout the city. The combination of the yellow and the swirl specifically represents the carvings of the artifacts within the gold museum. In addition, the spiral also makes for a good central point within the form. Another feature is represented in the darker red “fingers.” These fingers represent the workings of clay and give a nod to the historical architecture of Bogata. Acting as an abstract form of the Spanish-style roofing. Lastly the broken-up pieces within the “arms” person of the person. These resemble the 6 regions of Colombia, which connects to our ethos of diversity.
